23 warships (including geobukseon ) and received dis- tinguished military recognition by defeating Japanese fleets in battles in the straits of Noryang and coastal waters of Sacheon. The Battle of Sacheon was the first battle in which geobukseon engaged in actual combat. Additionally, traces of other fierce battles in which Ko- reans resisted against Japanese invaders to the death remain, including those at Sacheoneupseong Fortress, which was established to defend against Japanese at- tacks; Seonjin-ri Waeseong Fortress; and the Cemetery of Joseon-Ming Allied Forces, where the soldiers of the allied forces of the Joseon andMing dynasties who died in thewar are buried. Sacheoneupseong Fortress (Gyeongsangnam-do Monument No. 144) was built in 1442 by Sin Inson, the second minister of war, using earth and stone. Accord- ing to records, the circumference of the fortresswall was 913 meters, its height was 3.5 meters, and it had three gates. About 300 meters of the fortress wall remain today, and around the remaining areas of wall, Suyang Park has been constructed, featuring new structures such as Gwandeokjeong Pavilion, which used to be an archery practice range; Memorial Tower; Suyangnu Pa- vilion; and the octagonal Palgakjeong Pavilion. A well- kept trail through the park’s lush trees and dirt paths is popular among residents. A stroll along the fortresswall and around the park takes visitors on a journey through time. The night view seen from Palgakjeong Pavilion at dusk is particularly beautiful. Next, Seonjin-ri Waeseong Fortress (Gyeong- sangnam-do Cultural Property Material No. 274) is an earthen fortress that was built by Japanese forces to the north of Seonjinhang Port in Sacheon-eup. It is said to have been built hastily by Japanese general Mori Yoshishiro in 1579, during the late Joseon period, as a foothold of retreat. About 920 meters in circumference, it is situated on a peninsular jut of land, meeting the mainland on its east side and surrounded by sea on the other three. As it was built in haste, it is considered an incomplete structure whose outer rampart, being made of earth, has now collapsed completely, making it hard to see what it used to look like. By planting trees and completing erosion control work in 1974 and 1975, it has been developed into Seonjin Park, where a monument celebrating Admiral Yi Sunsin’s victory at the Battle of Sacheon stands. 4 사천읍성팔각정(침오정) 아래인공연못 An artificial pond in front of the octagonal Chimojeong Pavilion at Sacheoneupseong Fortress 5 녹음이우거진사천읍성전경 The lush green scenery of Sacheoneupseong Fortress
