Following a taste for the arts: Jinju Neighboring the city of Sacheon, Jinju is a city in the center of western Gyeongsangnam-do where a thousand years of history and culture reside. During the early Three Kingdoms Period, it was home to the Goryeong Gaya from the Gaya Alliance before it fell under the influence of the Baekje Kingdom, and later was incorporated into the Silla Kingdom. Geograph- ically, it was closer to Silla territory, but, along with Geochang, is recorded as Baekjae territory in histor- ical records such as the Samguk sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) and Goryeosa (History of Goryeo). Jinju has served as the central city of the Yeongnam region (i.e. Gyeongsang-do) for a long time. During the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, its name changed from Cheongju to Gangju, and a major government office equivalent to today’s pro- vincial government was established there.
