districts. The slaughterhouse in Suwon was moved to Ji-dong in 1910 during Japanese occupation, then to Ingye-dong, then to Pyeong-dong post-liberation in the 1970s, and finally to Omok- cheon-dong. People who worked at the slaughterhouse were called dobu and, as can be expected, their job mostly entailed slaughtering the cattle. As such, numerous and diverse people lived dependent on one another as a community for the sake of the cattle market’s smooth operation. The people of Suwon Cattle Market dutifully played their roles as means to an end, selling, purchasing, and herding cattle as well as running the stables. The children of the stable villages were said to be “dried up on the stove and sent off to the cattle market as soon as they were born” to become cowhands, brokers, cattle merchants, and later ranch owners. They grew up working at the stables, naturally experiencing and internalizing the ways of the cattlemarket. Suwon Cattle Market earned a name for itself as one of Korea’s top three cattle markets but ended up vanishing into history with Gokbanjeong-dong as its last home. The market sought to update its equipment and modernize its facilities, but as urbanization progressed, it was stigmatized as “unpleasant,” ousted to Gokbanjeong-dong, and eventually shut down. Never- theless, the city of Suwon still remembers the cattle market, and it lives on in the hearts of those who cherish the memories of the past. Perhaps it’s time that Suwon Cattle Market is restored not just in our hearts and memories but also in the form of official records so that, hopefully, the market’s once brilliant renown goes down in history. In hopes that Suwon CattleMarket’s 200-year history lives on
